As parents, we all want our kids to find that one activity they absolutely love. The one that gets them rushing to put their kit on without being asked. But often, misconceptions about certain sports can stop us from even trying them out.
At Blackpool Basketball, we hear the same worries from parents time and again. " Isn't basketball just for tall kids?" or "Won't it be too aggressive?"
So, we’re here to debunk the biggest myths about junior basketball and explain why it might just be the perfect fit for your child, whether they’re in Blackpool, Lytham, or anywhere on the Fylde Coast.
Myth #1: "You Have to Be Tall to Play"
Let’s tackle the big one first. While you might see giants in the NBA, at a junior level, height is absolutely not the most important factor.
In fact, some of the best players are often the smaller, quicker ones who can dribble low to the ground and zip past defenders. At Blackpool Basketball, we focus on skills that have nothing to do with height: passing, dribbling, shooting technique, and reading the game.
Whether your child is the tallest in their year or the smallest, there is a role for them on the court. We teach kids to use their natural attributes to their advantage, building confidence in their own bodies, whatever their size.
Myth #2: "It’s Too Rough and Competitive"
You might have seen professional games on TV that look quite physical, but grassroots youth basketball is a different world.
Our award-winning sessions are built on respect and safety. We have strict rules against rough play, and our qualified coaches are experts at teaching children how to defend safely and fairly. The focus is on fun and fundamentals, not winning at all costs.
Yes, basketball is a contact sport, but it’s a controlled one. Children learn discipline and self-control, understanding that a foul isn't just 'part of the game' - it’s a rule break that helps the other team.
Myth #3: "My Child Isn't 'Sporty' Enough"
This is perhaps the myth we love to bust the most. Basketball is fantastic for children who haven't clicked with traditional school sports like football or rugby.
Because basketball is so fast-paced and involves constant movement, kids get a brilliant cardiovascular workout without even realising it. They're too busy focusing on the ball and their teammates to notice they've been running for an hour!
We’ve seen countless "non-sporty" kids blossom in our sessions. The skills are broken down into manageable chunks - fiirst bouncing the ball, then passing, then shooting. This steady progression allows children to see their own improvement week by week, which does wonders for their self-belief.
Myth #4: "It’s Too Late to Start at [Age]"
Whether your child is 7 or 14, it is never too late to pick up a basketball.
Our Sunday Junior Academy and Mid-Week Courses are split by age and ability, ensuring beginners aren't thrown in the deep end with experienced players. We have plenty of 12 and 13-year-olds joining us for the first time, and they catch up surprisingly quickly.
The fundamental movements of basketball - running, jumping, throwing, catching - are transferable from playground games and other sports. Our coaches are skilled at integrating new players and helping them find their feet quickly.
Myth #5: "It’s Just Another Expensive Club"
We know that family budgets are stretched. That’s why we are committed to keeping Blackpool Basketball accessible.
We aren't a franchise with expensive joining fees and mandatory branded kits that cost the earth. We are a community club. Our 'pay-as-you-go' options and flexible term packages mean you’re not locked into scary contracts. You don't need expensive equipment to start-just a pair of trainers and a bottle of water. We provide the balls, the bibs, and the expertise.
